Dance at Your Wedding

"Choreographing the Moment"

You have all the details planned, but did you remember dance lessons, for the first dance at your wedding reception?

There should be much more style and showmanship to your “first dance”, than watching

out for your partner’s toes and standing in the middle of the floor, rocking back and forth!

(Oh no!! The penguin dance! Don't do it....please!!)

Are you deathly afraid of boring your guests or dancing like you were still in grade school?

(Every bride's - - and especially - - the groom's fear!)

Prepare for your Wedding Reception first dance by letting us choreograph a first dance that

will look great on your video, dazzle your family and friends, and be fun for you!

Come with your first dance wedding song in hand or discuss choosing the right music.   Learn how to work with your dance space, shaping, frame and form.    Learn the steps to the most popular wedding dances:

  • Fox Trot
  • Waltz
  • Country 3 Step
  • Country 2 Step
  • Slow Dance

and/or the more exotic first dances (usually requires private sessions also):

  • Tango
  • Cha Cha
  • Merengue
  • East Coast Swing
  • West Coast Swing (Basic Push/Whip)

Receive tips on how to enjoy yourself while creating a memorable first dance, by playing to the audience and each other.

Then, add lighthearted flourishes like a well-timed wink, spinning the bride, kissing her hand, or a bow and curtsy.  More adventuresome couples may want to add a special flair or even a dip!

We have group lessons that a couple could start out with...then schedule private lessons to fine tune a routine.

Private lessons (one couple with one instructor) are more to the liking of some couples, as they may want more individual instruction.

This class is for couples only.   We can also instruct Father/Daughter, Mother/Son and Father/Mother combinations for those who are interested in learning more about dancing at weddings. If you desire, Parents are invited to attend the same class as the bride and groom.

And Mom & Dad ...don't forget that you need to look sharp at that Anniversary Party when you have the dance floor to yourselves!

Recently, a popular option has become semi-private group classes, in which you choose up to seven couples of your choice, for instruction on the dances most suited to your event.   We hope to hear from you soon!

Tips & Hints

Tips & Hints

Q: What about the first dance music?
A: We suggest that the couple choose a song that has special meaning for them or has been a part of their courtship or family.  However, if you would like help choosing your song, we will make suggestions and help you to be well prepared for your wedding first dance.

Q: How far in advance should we begin our wedding classes or lessons?
A: Plan to start your lessons a minimum of 1 to a maximum of 3 months prior to your wedding reception. This will allow you plenty of time to practice. Many couples put dance lessons off until the last possible moment. This can put a lot of stress on the bride and groom, for something that should be really enjoyable for you and the guests!

Q: If we did wait until the last minute, what should we do?
A: Private lessons will be your only option.  Although it might be a little harder, we can "cram",  in the last week or two before your wedding reception.  Click on "Contact Us" for information on how to book privates.

Q: What clothing should I wear to my wedding dance lesson?
A: Make sure to wear comfortable clothes that are cool and move easily.  But sweats, worn out clothing, and shirts or jackets with "questionable" sayings, logos or photos, might be inappropriate around the other couples that will be attending the class, if it is a group class.  Please adhere to standard rules of hygiene.  :-)

Q: What footwear should I wear to my first dance lesson?
A: Wear comfortable shoes, of course.  No tennis shoes if possible, these will be sticky on wood dance floors (the treads are designed to do just that) and could catch and cause you to trip.  For men, a smooth leather bottom shoe such as a work loafer or cowboy boots works best.  For women, smooth leather or smooth rubber bottom dance or evening shoes (without tread) that attaches the heel to the ankle, are a must. Ladies leather bottom loafers are ok...but don't wear flip-flops or mules. These types of shoes can come off of your feet and be difficult to move in, or fall off easily and trip other students!  Bringing along and breaking in the shoes you will be wearing at the wedding is an option, if these can be cleaned effectively if they get "stepped on" or "floor dust" on them.

We are looking forward to meeting you and getting your first dance ready for your wedding, anniversary party, or Quinceanera.
